It’s summertime, which means lawn mowing and maintenance are in full swing here in the Town of St. John. While we all want to keep our lawns looking neat and well-maintained-residents are reminded not to blow grass clippings into the street.
Blowing grass clippings into the roadway can create both safety hazards and environmental concerns. Grass left on the pavement can become slippery—similar to ice—posing a danger to motorcyclists, bicyclists, and other vehicles. In addition, clippings can wash into storm drains, leading to blockages and improper drainage, which may contribute to localize flooding.
Placing grass clippings in the street may also violate Town Code, including:
- Sec. 14-1 – Public Nuisance: Conditions that are injurious to public health, safety, or comfort
- Sec. 14-21 – Definition of Nuisance: Includes anything that obstructs or creates danger within streets or drainage systems
- Sec. 14-22 – Nuisance Conditions: Prohibits the unauthorized obstruction of public streets or accumulation of refuse
To help keep our community safe and clean, please:
- Blow or rake grass clippings back onto your lawn, or
- Dispose of them properly in yard waste bags
