The Town Council established rules for the safe use of electric bicycles, electric scooters, and other motorized electric devices on public roads, sidewalks, and trails under Ordinance 1896.
Here’s what residents need to know:
- Roadways: Electric bicycles and low-speed electric devices may be used on public roads and bike lanes in accordance with state and local traffic laws.
- Under 16: Anyone under 16 may not operate a motorized electric device on a public roadway.
- Sidewalks & Trails: E-bikes and low-speed electric devices (under 20 mph) are permitted on sidewalks and multi-use trails unless posted otherwise.
- Higher-Speed Devices: Devices capable of traveling more than 20 mph under motor power, or devices modified to exceed their intended speed, are prohibited on sidewalks, multi-use paths, and trails.
- Yield to Pedestrians: Riders must always yield to pedestrians and provide an audible signal before passing.
- Safe Operation: Riders must maintain control and operate at a safe and reasonable speed for conditions.
- Helmet Requirement: Anyone under 16 operating an electric bicycle must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet.
- Nighttime Riding: E-bikes and electric devices operated between sunset and sunrise must have a white front light and a red rear reflector or light.
- No Reckless Riding: Careless, reckless, or unsafe operation that endangers people or property is prohibited.
- Park Rules: Additional rules may be posted for e-bikes and electric devices within Town parks and trail systems.
💰 Fines
Violations may result in a citation and fine:
- 1st offense: $25 minimum
- 2nd offense: $50 minimum
- 3rd or subsequent offense: $150 minimum
